Ford Rallye Academy Runs on Avons
Cooper-Avon Tyres Limited is doing its bit for the rally stars of the future by supplying tyres to the Ford Rallye Academy, open to anyone between the ages of 13 and 17 who has ambitions to be the next Richard Burns or Colin McRae.
Ford has developed a training car especially for the Rallye Academy. Called the Rallye Sport Trainer, or RST, this rear-wheel drive special is set up with just the right blend of power and cornering abilities and is equally at home on tarmac or ‘gravel’ stages. Critical to this set-up its Avon winter tyres which have sufficient grip and on-the-limit control on tarmac and provide excellent traction in the dirt.
At the end of the Ford Rallye Academy participants will be able to try rallying for real, and again Cooper-Avon will make a vital contribution, supplying special ‘forest’ rally tyres for the RSTs.
In addition to the tyres it supplies for the Ford Rallye Academy, Cooper-Avon also provides tyres to Drive & Survive, the respected driver training organisation that runs the Academy on Ford’s behalf. Drive & Survive’s fleet includes Ford Focuses, Toyota Corollas, Caterhams and Skid School cars.
No previous driving experience is required to sign up for the Ford Rallye Academy, which is held at the Rally and Off-Road Driving Centre at Enstone in Oxfordshire. Its aim is to teach young hopefuls all the skills they’ll need for a successful career in this exhilarating branch of motorsport, from car control through to basic maintenance, working with a navigator through to self-marketing abilities. And, of course, making the right tyre choice.
