GT Global Lights Go Quicker on Avons
Avon Tyres Racing is the new official tyre supplier to the UK GT Global Lights championship for the 2003 season.
Proof that the decision to swap to Avons was a good one came during extensive testing of the tyres – compared with last season’s supplier the Avons showed dry lap time improvements of between 0.5secs and 0.75secs per lap. Even more impressive improvements were recorded on a damp track.
Graham Hathaway of Graham Hathaway Racing, the respected and highly experienced race outfit that prepares the 600cc Yamaha-engined racers for the one-make series, is full of praise for the Avons. ‘I’ve been dealing with Avon for 30 years now and it’s always been a successful arrangement. In the case of the GT Global Lights, the improvements in lap times have been solely down to the tyres – the cars are unchanged compared with last season.’
GT Global Lights resemble scaled-down Group C endurance racers and despite their comparatively small engine size are capable of speeds of up to 130mph. In terms of their overall performance they’re comparable to British Touring Cars or Formula Ford single-seaters. They compete in an eight-round season, but as these are all ‘double-headers’ it means that each car races 16 times. Avon Tyres Racing will provide fitting facilities and technical support at all UK GT Global Lights events.
