Governor Taft Proclaims Ohio Tire Safety Week
Cooper Tire requests proclamation to raise awareness of tire safety among Ohio drivers
FINDLAY, Ohio, April 14, 2004 - COOPER TIRE & RUBBER COMPANY (NYSE: CTB) announces that Ohio Governor Bob Taft has proclaimed April 25 to May 1 as Tire Safety Week in Ohio at the request of the Findlay, Ohio-based tire company. The governor's proclamation is in conjunction with the Rubber Manufacturers Association's (RMA) National Tire Safety Week, which is dedicated to educating drivers about tire care and safety.
"Governor Taft's proclamation raises awareness of a safety – and environmental – issue that needs to be on the minds of Ohio drivers," said Thomas A. Dattilo, Cooper chairman, president and chief executive officer. "Properly maintained tires make safer vehicles, making Ohio's roads safer, too. Additionally, industry studies tell us that properly inflated tires improve a vehicle's gas mileage which is good for the environment."
According to the RMA, the four essential elements of tire care and maintenance include:
1. checking tire inflation pressure at least once a month and prior to long trips
2. periodic wheel alignment
3. tire rotation every 6,000 to 8,000 miles
4. regularly checking tire tread depth (should be at least 1/16 of an inch)
Complete information on tire safety and maintenance is available on Cooper Tire's Web site (www.coopertire.com) and on the RMA Web site (www.rma.org). Tire safety literature is also available at most Cooper Tire dealers. Additionally, vehicle and tire owner's manuals should be read and re-read periodically for the important safety information they contain.
